What IP refers to

Ingress Protection ratings describe specified resistance of an enclosure to solids and water under defined test conditions. They do not alone establish suitability for every environment.

Read the exact specification

Check the model rating, installation position, connectors and required seals or accessories. A product may have different protection performance when a cover is removed or a connector is left unplugged.

Consider the whole assembly

The completed installation includes wiring entries, mating connectors and mounting details. A high-rated device installed with an unsuitable entry point may not achieve the intended protection.

Always use the manual

Confirm the correct environmental classification and local installation requirements with qualified personnel before selecting a product for wet, dusty or outdoor applications.
